The Massey University Student Health & Counselling Service in Palmerston North is open throughout the year excluding public holidays and university holidays. We provide a service at the Manawatu campus site during office hours of 8:30am to 5pm. 

An emergency service based in town is available after hours, weekends and public holidays.

Our team endeavours to provide a high standard of health care possible in a manner that is competent, compassionate, confidential,  timely and in an atmosphere of mutual responsibility and respect.

We are proud to be accredited by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners as a RNZCGP Cornerstone Quality Practice. That means we have met the high standards set by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners which help make sure you receive high quality medical care.

Opening Hours

Our opening hours are Monday-Friday 8.30am-5.pm.  

Closed for National Statutory and Public Holidays as follows:

  • Tuesday 23rd April 2019 (University Holiday)

Massey University Closes Friday 20th December 2019 @ 5pm - reopening in January 2020 - Date to be advised. 

IN AN EMERGENCY OR AFTER HOURS

Call 111 or proceed straight to the emergency department of the

Palmerston North Hospital.

  • For a mental health emergency please contact the Mental Health Emergency team on 0800 653 357 or one of the telephone counselling services listed click here.
  • If you are in Massey Halls, please contact the Duty Manager on 0272 954 815
  • For Urgent medical issues when your GP Practice is closed, call free on 0800 373 030 to speak to a clinician between 6pm and 10pm.
  • Between 6pm and 8pm, the 0800 373 030 service will connect you to our local after hours service.  For you, this is City Doctors, based on Victoria Avenue, Palmerston North.  A consultation fee will apply.
  • Between 8pm and 10pm, you will be connected to a clinician who is trained and qualified to triage urgent medical issues. If a face to face consultation is required, an appointment will be offered with a GP, Nurse Practitioner or a Practice Nurse. For you this will be at the Palms, based on Ferguson Street, Palmerston North.  A consultation fee will apply.

General heath advice

  • Call the National Healthline on 0800 611 116

Healthline is a free 24-hour telephone health advice service funded by the Ministry of Health. This service is operated by registered nurses who will assess a person's condition and health needs and recommend the best course of action to be taken. They can also provide general health information and location of services.

National Health Advisory
Notification of measles outbreaks overseas

There are currently significant measles outbreaks overseas, including in the Philippines and some European countries.  For countries that are affected, please check the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, USA) website for travel updates - https://www.cdc.gov/measles/travelers.html.

We are advising people travelling overseas to make sure they are fully immunised against measles before they go.  

SafeTravel (https://www.safetravel.govt.nz) has added a message to their website advising all travellers to ensure that their measles vaccination is up to date prior to overseas travel.

Materials and Treatment fee

A $5.00 fee applies to the following:

  • Depo Provera
  • Liquid Nitrogen
  • Simple wound dressing/cover
  • B12 Administration (Intramuscular injections, Maxolon/Buscopan etc)
  • Emergency Management – Emergency Bag call out
  • Audiogram
  • ECG

This fee covers basic material costs and will be reviewed on an annual basis.

 

As of the 1st January 2018, Massey Manawatū Student Health & Counselling Centre introduced general fees for all PHO enrolled students: a GP visit will be charged at  $10 and a nurse consultation $5. Payment will need to be made at the time of the consultation. All  Non-PHO enrolled students will continue to pay as per usual and fees will vary depending on if you have a community services card.

 Students requesting double appointments will be charged at a higher rate. Fees introduced this year to cover procedures, services and material will stand as will the Did not attend fee.

Effective January 1, 2018, Massey University is Smokefree. This includes all workplaces, student accommodation, campus grounds, campus buildings, farms, staff accommodation, vehicles on site (including personal vehicles) and vehicles provided for staff.
