Few of us would ignore a physical symptom that caused us to worry or got in the way of a full or enthusiastic life. Why should an emotional symptom get any less attention?

Difficulties are inevitable. Sometimes life gets lonely, confusing or miserable and it can be hard to know what to do about it. Problems can exhaust us and hinder us from enjoying our studies, life and relationships and pursuing goals, dreams and interests. Talking to friends and family can often only help so far.

We have counsellors from a variety of cultural backgrounds who see individual students, couples or even family members with a wide range of issues that prevent you from making the most of your time at University.

Booking an Appointment

For your first counselling appointment, please click here to complete our confidential assessment form that will be sent through to one of our Counsellors.  This confidential questionnaire provides us with a better understanding of how we can help you.  If you are not comfortable filling this out online, copies can be obtained from our Health and Counselling Centre. Within three days of receiving your questionnaire, we will contact you and offer you an appointment.

If you need to see someone in an emergency please contact us on 09 2136700.  An emergency would include you feeling that you are at risk of hurting yourself or feeling too overwhelmed to function. 

The student counselling service does not provide an after-hours service.  Outside our normal service hours (8.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday) the following services can be contacted:

Services

Any issue that is of concern to you can be brought to counselling. Some common issues are:

  • Problems getting in the way of study
  • Loneliness
  • Difficulties with friends
  • Relationships
  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • Grief and loss
  • Sexuality
  • Eating problems
  • Depression
  • Stress and difficulties concentrating
  • Personal growth and development
  • If you have had a crisis or traumatic and upsetting event (such as an accident or death) happen to you or someone else and it is having an impact on you.

Who goes to counselling?

  • People who find their study is compromised because of a personal problem
  • People who know they deserve a better life than they are getting
  • People who are sick of worry, anxiety or stress getting in the way of having fun and enjoying life
  • People who want to leave problems behind them and make their dreams a reality
  • People who prefer to be proactive
  • People who are finding problems are getting in the way of them achieving their goals

How can I make sure the counsellor is a good one?

  • Ask about the counsellor's qualifications, experience and way of working
  • Check that they are a member of their professional association, (for example the New Zealand Association of Counsellors, or New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists), which have their own set of rules, ethical standards and complaints procedure
  • Ask if your counsellor has regular supervision
  • You can stop counselling at any time, for any reason
