It is important to note that as an international student studying in New Zealand you need to be aware of the rules of your student visa if you want to work in New Zealand while you study. If you plan to work in New Zealand post-study, you will need a New Zealand work visa.
Before you start looking for work, check the conditions of your student visa. You may be able to work part-time, up to 20 hours per week, and full-time during scheduled holidays.
Your e-visa or visa label in your passport will show if and when you are allowed to work while you are studying in New Zealand. To find out more about working on a student visa, visit the NZ Study+Work website.
Part-time work is a great way for you to develop your English language skills and your knowledge of New Zealand's workplace culture. It is also a good way to make connections with people who may be able to offer you useful information, new contacts, or details of possible job opportunities.
Before you start working in New Zealand, it is important you understand your rights as an employee, leave entitlements, and minimum wage rates. You can find this information on the Employment New Zealand website.
During your studies, try to gain work experience that is relevant to the career in the industry or sector you'd like to work in. Take all opportunities to build your English language proficiency in reading, writing and listening. Speaking with fluency and accuracy is another good goal to achieve.
