I am an ecological statistician. My work spans several disciplines, from basic biology and ecology through to mathematical and applied statistics. My core research is in community ecology, biodiversity, multivariate analysis, experimental design and resampling methods. My focus is to develop novel statistical methods for the analysis of ecological communities, including appropriate sampling algorithms and models for making valid statistical inferences in these high-dimensional multi-factorial systems.

I define myself as a soil chemist, with specific expertise in the subject area of environmental geochemistry.

I have significant experience in the application of new environmental chemistry techniques (analytical and technology-based) to current science and technology problems. A key focus of my research is the use of plants to extract, degrade or immobilise contaminants in soil. My research has been dominated by attention to trace elements, but extends to organic contaminants. Underpinning my research is a quest to understand the flux of contaminants within the soil-plant-animal biogeochemical system.

To sum up my research in one thought: I study the numerical propagation of waves. Whether their nature be quantum or classical depends upon the problem's scale. Various carrier media effects -  e.g. loss, gain, nonlinearity, or periodicity - can be considered, accounted for in the numerical modeling of wave transport, and shown to give fundamentally interesting and/or commercially developable results.

I very much enjoy co-learning with my students and extending the boundaries of knowledge. During my own learning journey I have been very fortunate to have worked with a number of generous and open minded scholars who have helped me develop a systematic perspective of business. Through my work with professionals and students I attempt to help others broaden their views and consider the wider context of the problems they encounter.

I am a generalist.  My teaching, research and postgraduate supervision is very diverse but with two main themes: aquatic systems, and quantitative methods.  My PhD thesis (Victoria University, Wellington) was on the biogeography and systematics of New Zealand caddisflies.  That involved discovering and describing new species of these aquatic insects but also led to research in methods for phylogenetic analysis, biogeographic theory, and also the ecology of the stream communities that caddisflies are part of.  More recently I have branched out to study lake ecosystems (particularly deep stratified lakes) and fisheries modelling.

However, I am now returning to my “roots” in plant pathology.  My current research involves assessing fungicide tolerance in Mycosphaerella graminis in local wheat crops.

Our research focuses on understanding the nature of plant speciation and diversification using a variety of approaches.  We use molecular phylogenetics to test ideas of species relationships, taxonomy, biogeography, and character evolution.  We also use morphological and molecular tools to understand different evolutionary processes affecting plant speciation, including hybridization and polyploidy (whole genome doubling) and plant mating systems.  A recurrent theme of our research is to assess and understand the repeatability of evolution and its effects on morphological and genomic level traits.

My research is principally focussed on understanding plant responses to environmental factors within the context of increased sustainability and quality in crop production. My key interest is focused on the role of sunlight, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation in particular. Whilst plant responses to UV are numerous, comparatively little is understood regarding the possible exploitation of such endpoints to drive quality within modern crop production. Our research encompasses fundamental plant science, and the application of that knowledge through commercialisation pathways.
